We understand that joining a new world can be intimidating so we’ve compiled a list of very common questions newcomers have when they first join us. What is Ballroom dancing?
Ballroom Dancing is an umbrella term for a number of partner dances, such as Waltz, Cha Cha, Tango, Samba, and many more. Sometimes, the term in its strict sense means Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep, to the exclusion of the Latin Dancing.
What is Latin dancing?
Latin Dancing is a subset of Ballroom Dancing, which includes dances like Cha Cha and Rumba. Here at Rebel DanceSport, you can learn it all!
What is social dancing?
Social Dancing is where a bunch of people go to a party, dance music is played, and people randomly pair up and dance one song at a time. Depending on what song is played, you may dance the Foxtrot, the Salsa, the Hustle, or one of over a dozen dances! Using the skills you learn with us, you will be able to attend these parties and dance even with a complete stranger, having learned how to lead and follow.
What is competitive dancing?
Rebel DanceSport attends intercollegiate dance competitions across the Southwest, where dancers compete against each other in the Ballroom dances. Competitions are divided by level, and the Newcomer level is only open to those who have just started to learn to dance. Once you join the team, you will be able to come with us to these competitions and compete against other dancers at your own level for prizes and glory.
Do I need a partner to join?
Not at all! Everyone in class is paired up and continuously swaps partners, so everyone gets a chance to dance with everyone else. Newcomers (who want to) will be matched with partners to practice and compete with outside of class.
Is any special attire required?
Just wear something comfortable. Eventually, you may consider special dance shoes that have suede on the bottoms for the perfect amount of grip and slide.
Do I have to do competitions?
Nope! Feel free to just come to group classes if you want. We’ll never force you to do anything, or kick you off the team if you choose not to participate in an activity or event.
Can I join without any experience?
Absolutely. We have Level 1 classes specifically designed for members with no experience dancing, and higher level classes for those who already know how to dance.
Do you teach the nightclub dances like salsa, bachata, etc?
While many of our members know how to dance these styles, we do not teach them in our club. We stick to the 10 main international styles because time is limited and we want to give you a strong foundation in the beginning of your dance journey. If you’re interested in learning the other styles, come to a social dance with us and we’ll be happy to help you learn.
